Biological Altruism

In evolutionary biology, an organism is said to behave altruistically when its behaviour benefits other organisms, at a cost to itself. The costs and benefits are measured in terms of reproductive fitness, or expected number of offspring. So by behaving altruistically, an organism reduces the number of offspring it is likely to produce itself, but boosts the number that other organisms are likely to produce. This biological notion of altruism is not identical to the everyday concept. In everyday parlance, an action would only be called ‘altruistic’ if it was done with the conscious intention of helping another. But in the biological sense there is no such requirement. Indeed, some of the most interesting examples of biological altruism are found among creatures that are (presumably) not capable of conscious thought at all, e.g. insects. For the biologist, it is the consequences of an action for reproductive fitness that determine whether the action counts as altruistic, not the intentions, if any, with which the action is performed..(...continua no site)

Evolução
Em biologia, comportamentos altruístas não necessitam de ter uma vontade consciente de beneficiar outros por trás deles. Comportamentos são considerados altruístas quando traduzem gastos para a aptidão reprodutiva do organismo e uma vantagem para outro organismo. Altruísmo é comum em organismo com estruturas sociais complexas, como mamíferos ou insectos. Morcegos-vampiro são conhecidos por regurgitar sangue para o dar a outros vampiros que não se conseguiram alimentar na mesma noite para evitar que morram à fome. Este tipo de comportamento foi considerado um puzzle por Charles Darwin quando da elaboração da sua teoria de evolução por selecção natural, pois comportamento deste tipo traria prejuízo para quem o produz, mas a selecção natural não elimina estes comportamentos. Uma solução apontada é que o comportamento traria benefício para um grupo de organismos, surgindo o conceito de selecção de parentesco.[1]

A page of photographs of local Oxfordshire buses past and not so past. I've cheated a little bit and included a couple of operators from across the borders, but which are or have been regulars in the county. Since I grew up in North Berkshire before the boundary changes made Abingdon part of Oxfordshire, I think that's entirely fair! Click the images for larger versions.
 | Abingdon Coaches ran a variety of Bedfords, and for many years the dominant model was the SB, but KEH133K was a YRQ with Duple body. It was parked in Wantage, alongside a Reliance/Roe which began service with Halifax but was still in West Yorkshire PTE colours. By the time of this photograph the company was operating as Abingdon and Wantage Coaches. |

Caminho das águas
Uma faixa azul de 3 km corta a costa de Vitória, pintada no chão. Outra foi pintada em Florianópolis. O artista chama-se Piatan Lube. As faixas foram pintadas onde o mar chegava, na área que hoje é aterro, cidade, cimento.
Não fotografei, mas achei algumas fotos que registram a intervenção, e alguns comentários em outros blogs, p. ex., victordarosablogspot.com, postagem de 25 de novembro.
Gosto da intervenção, ela é sutil e ao mesmo tempo chama o olhar, nos faz lembrar da deterioração da costa nessas (e noutras) cidades.
